The trend for marrying abroad is becoming increasingly popular as LV insurance, who carried out the survey, discovered with one in six British couples now marrying abroad.
In the past five years, 280,000 couples from the UK have married overseas with America, Spain and Italy the most popular destinations.
A significant factor in the decision made by couples is due to the money they save.
Travel costs are more expensive when compared to the wedding being held at home, but other aspects of the big day were found to be a lot cheaper. This included the cost of the venue, caterers and entertainment. The option of combining the wedding and a honeymoon into one was also found to cut costs for couples-to-be.
LV insurance found that couples could save up to £10k if they choose to get married abroad. Sadly for the wedding guests, the savings are not as good, with guests having paid almost £7.3bn over the past five years to be part of a wedding abroad.
This includes their travel, accommodation, new outfits and wedding gifts, with the average guest thought to pay a total of £1,959 on a wedding abroad, compared to only £490 for a wedding in the UK.
When looking at the reasons for choosing a more exotic location, couples said they had family living there. This was followed by good weather, and an exotic setting.
