According to NBC News, Ben Kokes from San Francisco spent months designing the unique ring for his fiancée Julie.
In an interview with the news agency, he explained he would go his local machine shop to spend time on the project, which he referred to as "Project Longhaul".
He did admit, however, that it was difficult to hide his plans from his bride-to-be.
He said: "She kinda likes this kind of thing, so it was tough making excuses for why I was going to the shop all the time."
The ring looks like a normal titanium band with diamonds engraved around it. Once the couple start holding hands, the ring then lights up.
On his blog, Kokes, who has also posted a short video to YouTube showing the ring lighting up, said he made the ring "because doing things in the most complicated way possible" was his way of showing his love for his fiancée.
