Speaking to The Times magazine, the former X Factor winner said she wasn't sure if she would have children of her own, but would adopt after learning about her mother's childhood.
Lewis's mother spent her childhood in care and the singer said she was inspired by the story.
The 28-year-old described her mum Maria as a "hero" for her providing her with a home and giving her a sense of family unity.
She said: "My mum is a hero to me, that's given me a very strong sense of family loyalty to those I trust. I will definitely adopt children. I'm not sure if I want my own."
The singer, who is a strict vegetarian and a campaigner for animal rights, has previously adopted a number of animals and believes this is directly linked to her mother's life in a children's home.
She explained: "I am 100 per cent convinced that adopting animals is a result of my mum's childhood experiences.
"Her mum died and her dad wasn't there, so she and her three brothers were taken to a children's home in Penarth in Wales.
"They grew up there and were never adopted. Who's going to adopt four children in one go? I am very close to my mum and I think that's where my protective feelings come from."
