The study, which was carried out by Recombu.com, polled 1,432 heterosexual cohabiting couples from around the UK as part of research into the effect technology has on relationships, the Daily Mail has said.
The survey found a significant proportion of participants spent as many as three evenings per week in separate rooms from their partner so they could watch their desired television shows.
Those taking part were initially asked, 'Do you regularly watch television as a couple?' to which 52% said they did. 27% said 'now and again', while a further 21% said they didn't.
It was also revealed that many couples failed to share the same taste in television shows, with just 15% saying they enjoyed the same programmes all the time.
When asked about the conflicts regarding what to watch, 24% said they would solve the issue by watching what they wanted in another room, while 20% claimed they would compromise by recording their show and watching it at a later date.
Flicking between the two shows, was the answer for 17% of those surveyed, while 14% said one of them would miss out on watching their choice.
For the couples who opted to watch shows in different rooms, they admitted that on average this happened at least three times a week.
Interestingly, when questioned over the genre of programmes causing the most conflict, 57% of female respondents said that their partner 'objected to soaps' the most, while 53% of men said sporting events caused the most friction.
Respondents were also asked who in the relationship was the most likely to miss out on their preferred choice of television programme, with 61% of women claiming they often won the battle to watch their choice.
Alex Lane of Recombu Digital said: "It's no surprise to us in our office that there’s a battle between soaps and sport in the majority of households. I’m sure evening Champions League fixtures are a real bone of contention when it comes to missing Corrie.
"Let’s hope the television stakes are a bit more relaxed over the summer months. Unless Ashes fever takes hold of course; then cricketing highlights could mean a few more nights with couples in different rooms!"
