In an interview with The Sun, the singer said her parents – Keith and Mary Hudson – were glad the couple had split.
Perry's parents are devout Pentecostal pastors and have previously spoken out about their daughter's famous lifestyle after she was brought up with a strict Christian background.
Speaking to the publication, Perry explained: "I thank God every day for having made us all the same way and I pray for anyone who fights for freedom of speech.
"I'm pro-gay marriage and want equality between genders. My mom thanks God every day for my divorce."
Earlier this year, the 28-year-old referred to her failed marriage to Brand as the elephant in the room.
"It's a very tiny elephant... It's like a little Tchotchke now," she admitted. Tchotchke is a Jewish term meaning a small worthless trinket or knick knack with little or no purpose.
While Brand also joked about their nuptials, saying: "That marriage was shaky from the get-go, before I'd even got off the elephant... Let me tell you a thing about marriage. Marriage is a bond that can last up to 14 months... This is a sacred 14-month arrangement. Begins on an elephant. Ends in a newspaper."
Perry and Brand first met in 2009 on the set of Get Him To The Greek. They began dating in September of that year, announcing their engagement in December.
They married in October 2010 in a traditional Hindu ceremony in India, but after 14 months of marriage, Brand filed for divorce citing irreconcilable differences.
