The news comes after it was reported the couple had broken up again, Female First has said.
The couple were said to have split earlier this month – with speculation increasing after the two became involved in a Twitter war – and friends of 24-year-old Brown claim the pair need time apart.
Speaking to HollywoodLife.com, they said: "It is what it is. One day he's with her, and the next they fight and they're over.
"He's sad that she's sad and it irritates him when she blasts him on Twitter. But that's how girls are sometimes, he can't help that.
"They're giving each other space right now."
The source didn't rule out the possibility of a reunion however, adding: "I'll tell you this much, it's never really done with them."
Following the latest split, Rihanna and Brown were involved in a fiery Twitter exchange. Neither referred to the other directly, but rapper Brown hinted his former girlfriend had been unfaithful after she was said to have been partying with her ex JR Smith.
He wrote: "'She's not mine if she's everybody elses."
The tweet appeared to be in response to Rihanna's message the day when she posted a photo allegedly attacking Brown and his behaviour.
