A new study has found that wedding guests are now spending an average of £440 in order to just attend a ceremony. Most of those who were surveyed were found to spend a week's wage on the event, with many admitting to attending up to five weddings a year.
Most of the costs went on an outfit for the couple's big day, with 70% of women saying they would pay more than £150 for the perfect outfit. Accommodation came second in the list, with 61% of those polled spending more than £150 on the stay. Interestingly, 50% of guests said they spent more than £100 on a present for the bride and groom, despite the general idea of a wedding gift for the couple finishing rather low on the list of guests' priorities.
Lastly, just under half of Brits said they set aside a budget of £50 or more for drinks at the wedding reception.
Helen North, Head of Marketing for fashion etailer Kaleidoscope, who commissioned the survey, said: "The cost of weddings is always considered from the perspective of the bride and groom, but just how much does it cost the guests and where do they see the need to spend money to ensure they are the very best wedding guest.
"It’s wonderful to see from our survey results that despite the current economic climate, it is still important for British men and women to celebrate weddings in style."
