The research, which was carried out by 3M, found a quarter of young brides now choose not to wear a white dress for their big day, with red, pink and blue gowns leading the way instead.
27% of 18 to 24-year-olds said they would not get married in traditional white, with 9% saying they would wear a red dress, 20% opting for a pink one and 4% choosing to marry in blue.
However, 85% of 35 to 44 year olds said they would still get married in white.
The research also looked at the colours we associate with various events and emotions, and found that red is typically viewed as the colour representing love. Yellow was the most popular choice to represent happiness.
When it came to the influence of choosing a colour, women are more likely to say their mother has had the greatest impact on their choice, while more than a third of men admitted their favourite sports team had influenced their choice.
Karen Haller, of 3M, said: "It's interesting that mums have had a great impact on their daughters.
"We all know what colour tones we are drawn to and those we aren't, it's just a matter of trusting our intuition.
"Men will often choose their team's colour as it gives them a sense of belonging.
"As human beings we have an innate need to belong to a tribe. In essence, they are creating an emotional connection through colour."
