According to a report in the Daily Mail, the study discovered that non-celebrity couples with an age gap of more than eight years, are likely to be poorer, uglier and more stupid.
Researchers also found that this likelihood increased as the age gap widened.
'Sugar daddies' are viewed as old, rich men with younger 'trophy wives', such as Playboy boss Hugh Hefner, whereas 'cougars' are older women who have toyboy lovers. Celebrity cougars include Demi Moore who was married to Ashton Kutcher and Caroline Flack who dated Harry Styles. Both couples had an age gap of 15 years.
However, economic professors from the Colorado university found that people married to someone much older, or much younger, earned less than the national average wage.
They also scored lower in intelligence tests and were considered less attractive.
Interestingly, the survey also revealed that the larger the age gap, the more negative the performance was in each area.
The researchers studied census data from between 1960 and 2000 as well as large scale 'longitudinal' surveys covering measures of attractiveness and cognitive skills.
Combining the statistics allowed the team to see the ages of married partners, their education records and compare them to their ratings for physical attractiveness and mental agility.
Researchers believe that one of the reasons for this could be that men and women who spend longer in education, especially four-year university courses, are more likely to socialise with those of a similar age. As a result, this makes them more likely to marry peers of a similar age when they college and enter into high paid jobs.
On the other hand, they added that workers in low paid, unskilled jobs often mix with a greater variety of age groups in their workplace, and therefore are more likely to meet someone a few years older or younger.
Assistant economics professor Hani Mansour who led the research said: "Our results call into question the conventional wisdom regarding differently aged couples.
"It really depends on who your social network is. People with lower earning potential are in networks that are more age diverse."
The team also denied a significant rise in 'cougars', saying they found no real evidence of a new "cougar phenomenon".
