According to a new survey, one in three women claim having an affair can actually help to keep their marriage alive.
The report, which is published in the Daily Mail, also found that of those who do have affairs, 73% said they do so because they feel neglected by their spouse or partner.
Of those who said neglect was the reason for their infidelity, many also admitted to not having their emotional needs met. This was a significant role in their decision to find someone else.
Discussing the results, Noel Biderman, founder of dating website ashleymadison.com, said: "Many women lack attention and affection and it's miserable to feel lonely within your own marriage.
"The reality is that many people can't leave their partners for financial reasons and women in particular are usually reluctant to sacrifice their family life.
"So they are taking care of their needs outside marriage. They're stepping into the male arena when it comes to infidelity."
In addition to adultery and an increasing number of hours spent in the office, 67% of women polled revealed their reason for being unfaithful was down to less than spectacular sex with their husbands.
However, for these women it appeared that some good appeared to come out of their indiscretions, with 32% saying their cheating gave their sexual relationship with their spouse a boost.
