PM Criticised Over Same-Sex Marriage Stance

Senior Conservatives have repeated a call for the Prime Minister to abandon moves to legalise same-sex marriage.

According to The Times, they said David Cameron's stance over the controversial issue was harming Tory election chances. As a result, they have urged him to focus on other key issues including the economy, immigration and bringing forward an EU referendum.

The request was made by Conservative Grassroots, which is a national network of officials and supporters who want a return to 'core' Tory values.

Sir Gerald Howarth, a former defence minister, said his constituents were "fed up to the back teeth" because the Government failed to deliver on promises.

The comments come after last week's county council elections, which saw the Tories lose 335 council seats while the UK Independence Party (UKIP) soared.

Speaking to the Daily Express, Chairman of Conservative Grassroots Robert Woollard added: "The Prime Minister needs to listen to voters and start acting like a Conservative.

"He is losing crucial votes and our membership base is falling rapidly, from 400,000 to 130,000.

"Many members are looking elsewhere for a conservative alternative. If this mass defection continues, we will not have the support on the ground to campaign to win the 2015 election.

"It is essential the PM drops his policy to redefine marriage now. Many previously loyal Conservatives say that was the tipping point, the straw that broke the camel’s back. It is vital that Mr Cameron takes stock of these shocking election results and uses them to ditch unpopular policies.

"He must also re-engage with the grassroots members of his party, or they will back other parties more in tune with their values."

The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill is currently passing through the House of Commons, with senior sources claiming the Prime Minister is committed to the policy.
