The Hollywood actress made the comments in an interview with Glamour Magazine.
40-year-old Paltrow has been married to Coldplay frontman Chris Martin for 10 years and the couple have two children together.
However, despite her demanding life as both an actress and a mother, she said married life is not always "rosy".
She explained: "It's hard being married. You go through great times, you go through terrible times. We're the same as any couple.
"I asked my dad once, 'How did you and Mum stay married for 33 years?' And he said, 'Well, we never wanted to get divorced at the same time'. And I think that's what happens.
"When two people throw in the towel at the same time, then you break up, but if one person's saying, 'come on, we can do this', you carry on."
She added that the pair are "good friends".
The couple married in December 2003, and quickly became known for attempting to never be photographed together in public and rarely talking about their relationship.
