The country is the 14th to approve the law and was passed by 321 votes to 225 in the French parliament, the BBC has said.
The bill also legalises adoption by same-sex couples.
The decision follows a divisive public debate which has sparked some of the largest protests the country has seen for a number of years.
Hundreds of opponents to the changes rallied outside the National Assembly building in central Paris as they awaited the result. Following the approval of the motion, the leader of the most high-profile group opposing same-sex marriage said she would to continue to fight the issue.
Frigide Barjot told her supporters: "We are going to show them that this is not over. I solemnly ask the president to hold a referendum on the subject."
Opinion polls on the subject suggested that a small majority of French residents favour gay marriage, but surveys also indicated that fewer supported adoption by same-sex couples.
If the bill clears any challenge in the constitutional council, the first same-sex weddings could take place as early as June.
