According to luxury jewellery firm, Taylor&Co, some brides-to-be are so focused on having their dream ring, that they will help pay for it themselves.
Other women claimed they pleaded with their fiancé until they gave in. Interestingly, a few also admitted to getting upset or angry after their partner proposed – but they wanted a better ring.
The survey also revealed one in five women were willing to sacrifice a large, expensive wedding in order to secure their perfect diamond. When it came to finally picking out the ring, 10% of couples said they had argued during the process.
Of the 1,000 men and 1,000 women polled, 27% of men said the cost of a ring was important, while one in 20 women said a man should spend more than one month's salary on an engagement ring. However, 58% of women said this was now too much.
When quizzed on whether they should spend a month’s salary, 32% of men said they thought that was about right, compared to 61% who said it was too much. A further 6% said they didn’t think that would be enough to buy the ring of their girlfriend’s dreams.
88% of men admitted that women women could be demanding when it came to the type of engagement ring they want, with 13% claiming that a girl had been ungrateful when they had presented them with an engagement ring.
On average, the poll found women thought £1,360 was what a man should spend on a ring, while their counterparts thought it was slightly more at £1,531.
Sara Taylor, founder of Taylor&CO, said: "Choosing an engagement ring should be a magical time for couples.
"Some men choose an engagement ring themselves to pop the question, but others realise that it can be an expensive mistake if you get it wrong so involve their fiancé in the selection process. It’s understandable that some girls have their heart set on a certain style of ring, so it’s easy to see how there can be disputes.
"But it’s important to remember the reason why you are purchasing a ring in the first place. It seems a shame if couples are getting to the point where they argue."
She added: "Couples shouldn't focus too much on the cost of an engagement ring but it's important to choose a style that suits you and your own taste and that will stand the test of time.
"All being well you will be wearing it for the rest of your life."
