The survey, which was carried out by discount website MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, expectant parents said if there was a safe way to do so, they would pick whether to have a boy or girl and 'avoid' disappointment.
A total of 1,196 expectant parents were surveyed, with 54% open to choosing their baby's gender rather than being surprised by either a son or daughter.
Two fifths of respondents admitted they would like to choose the sex of the baby, admitting that they felt that way so they could have at least "one of each", while one in 10 claimed it would allow them to "save money" on clothes and toys.
A further quarter claimed "personal preference", while a fifth admitted they wanted to "avoid" disappointment.
Other results of the survey found 58% of expectant parents would even go as far as to construct their baby's appearance by choosing an eye colour, hair colour, nose shape, adult height and skin tone before he or she is born.
When respondents were asked if they wanted to know the sex of the baby they were currently expecting, 37% of those under 20 weeks through said they would, while more than half who had the dating scan said they have already found out.
