The music mogul made the admission in an interview with the Sunday Mirror.
The Syco boss, who will turn 54 later this year, added that he hadn't ruled out adoption, explaining that if he had the choice, he would prefer to have a daughter.
Speaking to the newspaper, Cowell added: "Would I like kids? If I knew I could be faithful [to the mother], then yes. I do like kids. If I did have a child, I have to say I'd prefer a girl.
"I'm not sure I would be a good dad for the first six months or so but once they know who I am, I would like it.
"I definitely haven't ruled out having children. I think I'd rather have my own but then again I wouldn't completely rule out adopting either."
Cowell previously dated Sinitta from 1984 until 2004, but the pair remained good friends, with Cowell being named as godfather for the singer's adopted children.
In February 2010, it was announced Cowell was engaged to make-up artist Mezhgan Hussainy, but the couple separated in 2012.
