Couple Jailed For Sham Marriage Plot

An Algerian man and a Lithuanian woman have been sentenced to 15 months in prison after attempting to plot a sham marriage.

According to Wales Online, Mohammed Maamier (37) and Laura Stasytiene (27) from Cardiff, admitted conspiring to avoid immigration enforcement action by deception.

Ms Stasytiene admitted she had breached the Immigration Act 1971 and after further discussions with lawyers, Mr Maamier also pleaded guilty.

During the course of the trial, the court hear the pair met through a marriage facilitator last July. They tried to marry at Cardiff Registry Office in the autumn, but did not have the correct documents.

They returned to the registry office in January this year, but the case was reported to South Wales Police and the UK Border Agency when the registrar become suspicious.

The two accused were taken to a police station for questioning and a search of Maamir's home revealed he had been learning about his bride-to-be from a sheet of crib notes.

The court also heard Maamir entered the EU eight years ago and arrived in the UK two-and-a-half years ago, while Stasytiene came legitimately to the UK from Lithuania 14 months ago.

Sentencing the couple, Judge Parry said: "These offences are far too common and there is a growing concern in this country about the safety of our borders and about who exactly lives here."

"This was a well-planned conspiracy and you both had something to gain."

He added Stasytiene had abused her right to live and work in the UK, while Maamir had committed "a cynical abuse of marriage".

Nick Jupp, Head of the Home Office’s Immigration Crime Team in Wales, confirmed both individuals would face deportation when their sentences were served.
