Survey Reveals Most Popular Baby Names For 2013

A new survey had revealed the most popular baby names from 2012 are set to remain just as popular for 2013.

The report, carried out by website BabyNames.co.uk, looked at the trends for the first quarter of the year and found an increasing number of names being taken from our grandparents' era.

In addition, there was also a notable shift in attitude towards what are often viewed as 'middle class' names.

When it came to girls' names, Amelie and Florence, which have been sitting outside the top 50 for a while, both made a significant jump towards the top ten names for 2013. Likewise, with boys' names, Toby, Sebastian and Jasper all appear to be more popular choices for this year.

Siobhan Thomas, Chief Editor at BabyNames.co.uk, said: "Names follow trends, just like clothes and hairstyles – with some taking longer to come full circle than others.

"Interestingly there has been a significant increase in popularity of the names Violet and Arthur which were both popular names at the start of the 20th Century, and Evelyn which was popular in the 1930s.

"Whilst new parents today are likely to balk at the suggestion of Susan, Linda, Ian or Keith for their baby (names popular amongst their parents' generation), looking back to their grandparents' era is far more attractive."

When looking at the sudden surge in popularity for names such as Florence and Sebastian, Ms Thomas added: "A lot of these names have traditionally held a somewhat middle-class association for people. It may be that new parents are reflecting their aspirations for their children by using these names or it may be that the "posh" connotation isn’t something that fazes people as much anymore."

The survey also found celebrities still continue to affect people's opinions when it comes to naming a baby.

"Jessica is a name that is proving as popular this year as it was last year, and its common association with Britain’s much-loved Olympian Jessica Ennis can be credited for its popularity," Thomas explained.

Last month, the website posted its most popular names for the year so far.

The top 10 girls names were:

• Ava

• Freya

• Ella

• Imogen

• Grace

• Amelia

• Olivia

• Mia

• Scarlett

• Eva

The top 10 boys names were:

• Noah

• Oscar

• Oliver

• Isaac

• Jacob

• Dylan

• Ethan

• Leo
