The couple travelled to Inverlochy Castle Hotel in the Highlands, the Scottish Sun has reported.
A wedding certificate for the couple shows Banks (59) married Miss Hartley (42) at the five-star hotel in a short humanist ceremony.
The wedding was witnessed by family and close friends, including the author's life-long friend, Les MacFarlane and his wife Aileen.
It is understood the couple are now on their honeymoon in Italy.
A source said: "Iain and Adele were keen to keep it hush-hush and didn’t want any fuss.
"Iain’s been a regular visitor to the hotel. He loves the scenery and couldn’t think of a better place to get married."
Last week, the Scottish author revealed he only had months to live after being diagnosed with gall bladder cancer. In a message on his website, he said he had asked Adele to be "his widow".
Following the news, publishers have brought the release date of Banks's latest book, The Quarry, forward to June.
