Speaking on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the singer admitted the couple were no longer together.
The pair were rumoured to have split last month.
At the time, a source close to the couple said Mayer feared dating 28-year-old Perry would damage his reputation as an artist.
Speaking to Ellen DeGeneres, Meyer admitted: "It was a very private relationship going in. It was a private relationship during, and it's a private relationship still.
"I can understand asking the question [about our split] based on some previous answers I have given, but I have finally learned how to put the wall between one thing and the other.
"I've been much happier since then. I'm on the same journey as everyone else. Coupling is a tricky thing. It's a tricky thing. I want everyone to be happy."
Last week, it was claimed Perry was open to reconciling the relationship in the future.
Perry and Mayer were first linked as a couple last summer.
