Scottish Marriage Rate Highest Since 2005

Latest figures have revealed the number of marriages in Scotland have increased for the third year in a row.

They are now at their highest level since 2005, according to the National Records of Scotland.

Provisional findings for 2012 revealed that 30,534 weddings took place, an increase of 4.8% from 2011.

In 2012, it was also found there were 574 civil partnerships with 257 male and 317 female. This was 20 more than recorded in 2011.

Speaking about the findings, the new chief executive of the National Records of Scotland, Tim Ellis, said: "In historic terms, the number of marriages in 2012 was relatively low. However, the total number of marriages has been rising since 2009 and in 2012 reached 30,534, an increase of 4.8% on the 2011 figure."

The latest report also includes statistics on births, deaths and adoptions.

In 2012, 58,027 babies were born – 563 fewer than the previous year – while the number of deaths was 1,276 more than 2011, with 54,937 deaths recorded.
