According to the Daily Mail, Sanele Masilela wed Helen Shabangu (61) after the boy's dead ancestors said he needed to get married. Fearing divine retribution if the request was not carried out, Masilela's family paid for a wedding.
The bride is already married and a mother to five children, ranging between the ages of 27 and 37.
The couple exchanged rings in front of 100 guests, even sharing a kiss.
The wedding has not been welcomed by the entire community, but Masilela's family have defended the ceremony, claiming it was just a ritual and not a legally binding marriage.
Patience Masilela, Sanele's mother, said: "This is the first time this has happened in the family. Sanele is named after his grandfather, who was never had a white wedding before he died so asked Sanele to get married. He chose Helen because he loves her."
Ms Masilela added: "By doing this we made the ancestors happy. If we hadn't done what my son had asked then something bad would have happened in the family.
"Sanele was fine and he was happy about the ceremony and it was what he wanted. He was happy to get married and very excited."
Sanele and his new bride did not sign a marriage certificate following the ceremony and do not have to live together. It is understood both have gone back to their normal lives.
