Over half the men who took part in the survey said they had the final say in the date of their big day, while 56% chose the venue.
When it came to the floral arrangements, one in 20 men had a say, while a further third helped to choose the cake.
Modern grooms are also taking charge of organising various aspects for their wedding day, including hiring the band and suits for the best men and ushers. Some were even responsible for choosing the wedding car.
A third of men also admitted they had bartered with suppliers in order to get the best price.
A spokesman for Austin Reed wedding hire-wear said the survey results were not surprising. He added: "There has always been an assumption that it's brides who call the shots regarding the big day, but due to the huge cost of weddings it now makes sense that the responsibility is shared. It makes sense for the bride and groom to take tackle things as a team."
Other results from the survey found that while the bride and groom pay most of the bill, 52% of brides said their parents contributed to the wedding, with 44% of grooms' parents chipping in.
Grandparents were also discovered to make a contribution, with one in 20 helping out on the groom's side, compared to one in 10 on the bride's.
Of the 2,000 people surveyed, 42% felt men were just as competent as women when it came to wedding planning. A further 59% said organising their wedding took over their life, with 25% admitting to planning much of their big day during work time.
Lastly, one in five men said the most important element of a good wedding was getting everyone tipsy and 52% said it was having their friends and family in one place.
For the bride however, a third said a "knock-out dress" was the most importance aspect of a wedding to remember, with 32% saying it was having the sun shining on the day.
