According to the latest website figures, 46 per cent of Americans are in favour, with the same percentage opposed to it.
The remaining eight per cent were unsure as to how they felt about the legalisation.
There were major differences to be found however based on age, region, political identification and religiosity.
For example, 60 per cent of voters under the age of 45 were largely in favour of legalising same-sex marriage, while 57 per cent of those aged 45 and over were against it.
Most Democrats are in favour (64 per cent), while 66 per cent of Republicans are opposed.
However, of the voters who regularly attended church services, 65 per cent said they were against gay marriage, while 53 per cent of those who attended church less frequently, were in favour.
When looking at regions, a majority of urban-based voters were in favour of same-sex marriages (52 per cent) while a majority of those in rural areas were in opposition to it (55 per cent).
Overall, those most likely to be in support of legalising gay marriage include those who "never" attend church (79 per cent), liberals (72 per cent) and voters under the age of 30 (68 per cent).
On the other side, those most opposed to same-sex marriage include "very" conservatives (79 per cent), Tea Partiers (76 per cent) and white evangelical Christians (71 per cent).
At the end of March, the U.S. Supreme Court will consider two cases concerning same-sex marriage. One of these includes California's gay marriage ban.
Recently, President Obama has said he believes same-sex couples should have the right to marry.
