US Bishops Hold Firm On Gay Marriage

Members of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops have said they will not soften their views on gay marriage.

Yesterday saw the first meeting of the Conference since Maryland and two other states legalised same-sex marriage.

The bishops maintain genuine marriage can occur only between one man and one woman.

William E. Lori, archbishop of Baltimore, said the results were "concerning".

The autumn general assembly in Baltimore has drawn roughly 300 bishops and archbishops to the Marriott Waterfront Hotel in Harbor East this week.

"We do face a challenge in communicating the true nature of marriage and its importance to society. But there's always prayer, teaching and catechising to be done, and we plan to continue doing just that," bishop Lori said.

Lori spoke of "the most persuasive argument of all"; that of "strong families with loving fathers, mothers and children".

Some bishops have suggested the Church needs to use more positive terminology regarding their position.

The comments came as the Catholic Church faces a variety of issues over the past year which undermine its teachings and beliefs.

A new health care law implemented by Barrack Obama requires most employers, including religious institutions, to provide health insurance covering contraception.

The Conference is an annual assembly of working and retired archbishops from across the States in Baltimore.

Leaders discuss and comment upon issues facing the Church.

On Nov. 6, Maryland, Maine and Washington became the first states to legalise same-sex marriage at the ballot box.

Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone of San Francisco said: "Last Tuesday was a disappointing day for marriage.

"Many people simply do not understand [that] marriage is ... the only institution that unites a man and a woman to each other and to any children born of their union."
