Figures released by ABC news indicate that Republicans may have yet more problems convincing Latin-Americans to vote for them.
The Latino population is growing steadily in the US and, according to ABC, this could mean an increase in support for legalising gay marriage across America.
The poll said 59% of Latino voters said their state should legally recognise same-sex marriage. 32% said it should not.
Among the whole electorate, the vote is a lot tighter. 48% favour the legalisation of gay marriage and 47% oppose it.
Republicans and conservatives may have been hoping to take advantage of the perceived insistence on 'traditional' family values among the Latino community, but these latest polls show the general opinion among Hispanics is moving towards acceptance of same-sex couples.
This is shown in the fact that Uruguay, Argentina and Mexico City have all legalised gay marriage, while countries like Colombia and Brazil have extended rights to same-sex civil unions.
According to the Washington Post, 52% of black voters in America support gay marriage.
Last week Maryland’s gay marriage law was passed, with 46% of black voters supporting the measure, according to the newspaper.
The states of Maine, Maryland and Washington also voted to legalise gay marriage.
Minnesota voted against defining marriage as a union solely between a man and a woman.
Gay marriage is also legal in Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, New Hampshire, New York, Massachusetts and Washington, D.C.
