The Scottish star has famously had an open marriage with his actress wife Kara Wilson.
Married 45 years ago in a Glasgow Catholic Church, the He theatre director and novelist has confessed his belief that the idea of monogamy is a by-product of our religious indoctrination.
Tom told the Mail Online that their was never a discussion about the relationship status.
"We agreed that if anything happened we were not to let it destroy what we have. It happened with both of us, so it wasn’t a problem; people make too much of it all. People torture themselves into not leading the lives they want to lead.
"They torture themselves about morals they don’t really understand or know why they exist. I would, I venture, not be very happy if my husband cheated on me. That’s because you were brought up a certain way, That comes from society. When it comes to it, what would he have done? It’s not like he’s left you."
