'Jesus Had A Wife' Claims From Ancient Papyrus

Could Jesus Christ have been married?

In a development that looks like a plot twist from The Da Vinci Code, a Harvard professor claims to have found a papyrus that makes explicit reference to Jesus having a wife.

Karen King, divinity professor, unveiled a 4th century Coptic script at a conference in Rome, saying it contained the words "Jesus said to them, 'my wife'".

Professor King said that in early years of the Christian church, there was debate over whether Jesus married or not.

She said his wife could have been Mary Magdalene, and predicted that the find would spark debate about celibacy.

But other theologians were sceptical.

Wolf Peter-Funk. A Coptic linguist who attended the same conference, said there were "thousands of scraps of papyrus where you find crazy things".

But Professor King said: "It is not evidence, for us, historically, that Jesus had a wife.

"It's quite clear evidence, in fact, that some Christians, probably in the second half of the 2nd Century, thought that Jesus had a wife."
