Best Man Loses Ring During Ceremony

The newlyweds might find it funny someday in the future, when they look back on it.

But their big day was halted for ten minutes while the best man searched for the ring.

Elizabeth Gray and Lewis Aubrey were in the middle of their vows at St John's Church in Redhill, Surrey, when Lewis's brother Matt dropped the ring.

As blushes grew deeper, the carpets were lifted and flower displays were pulled apart.

The best man even let guests search his sporran.

After the search proved fruitless, the bride's mother let her own ring be used and the ceremony continued.

But the minister did not give up hope that the ring would be found.

Rev Nicholas Calver said: "I couldn't believe something could disappear so thoroughly.

"I was determined to find it and went back to the church in the evening. In the end, there was a crack between the step and the raised dais.

"I thought it must be down there so I levered them apart with a spade to make the gap bigger, shone a torch down and saw the ring. I was delighted to find it.

"I took it down to the reception and the best man was standing outside. I poked him in the ribs and said 'you owe me a drink'. He was overjoyed."

Kelly Love, one of the bridesmaids, said of the moment the ring reappeared: "I have never heard a noise like it. The whole place erupted. The vicar was like a hero."
