Robert Ziga spent more than 90 minutes staking out Bradford Royal Infirmary before choosing his victim, who was left crying on the ward after the theft.
Christine Brown, a stroke victim, was in a private room on the hospital's cancer ward.
She initially mistook Ziga for her son but when she began to shout for help, he pulled off her diamond ring and escaped with her mobile phone too.
Mrs Brown had been wearing her engagement ring for 52 years.
Jailing Ziga for five years and four months for robbery, Judge Robert Bartfield said: "I regard the invasion of a room in hospital just as serious as a person's own home."
Although Mrs Brown did not have cancer she was placed on Ward 15 in a private room because she had problems with sickness, she had been in the hospital for almost a month after falling at home in December.
Ziga admitted robbery and told police where to find the treasured ring.
His defence lawyer Nigel Hamilton said: "When officers visited her husband at his home and showed him the diamond ring he could not believe what he was seeing and kissed the ring through the bag. He said he had seen the ring every day for 52 years and without a shadow of a doubt, it was Christine's engagement ring."
