Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed & Something Blue
These are four of the most famous traditions associated with getting married and one you’ll see at most weddings.
The reason for the bride carrying something old, is to represent a link to the bride’s family and the past. It can be anything from a piece of family jewellery to your grandmothers wedding dress.
Carrying something new is meant to ensure good fortune and success in the bride’s new life – this is about looking forward to the future with a happy and open heart. Quite often, brides will choose their wedding dress to be their something new.
Having something borrowed with you is meant to be a reminder to the bride that her friends and family are always close by and ready to help. This can be anything from a family trinket to something as simple as a lace handkerchief.
And last but not least, it’s meant to also be good luck to carry something blue – this tradition dates back to biblical times, when blue was associated with purity. Quite often, you’ll find a little splash of blue on the brides garter.
Confetti
You can’t really have a wedding with confetti but why exactly do we choose to throw these brightly coloured scraps of paper on the happy couple? Traditionally, well wishers would throw grains of rice at the bride and groom – hoping to encourage fertility. Today, this has been replaced the modern confetti which is a little bit prettier than grains of rice!
Wedding Veils
The wedding veil is the pinnacle of bridal traditions but where did this tradition come from? The wearing of the veil is meant to hide the bride’s beauty and ward off evil spirits. Wedding tiaras are also often used to complete the look although there is no history to this apart from fulfilling many princess dreams!
Wedding Favours
It’s always lovely getting a wedding favour when you attend the big day of your loved ones but what exactly is behind this custom? There’s an endless choice of trinkets you can select as your wedding favour but if you’re looking to keep it traditional, then you should be giving your guests five sugar coated almonds which represent health, wealth, fertility, happiness and long-life.
