Sinn Féin will bring a motion on the issue of marriage equality before the July meeting of Belfast City Council tonight.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Cllr Mary Ellen Campbell, who proposed the motion, said: "Sinn Féin is for equality and the issue of marriage equality for same sex couples is one which is gaining more attention not just here but all around the world.

"Belfast is a city that is changing all around us and I believe changing for the better. It is a city that now has a hard earned reputation as a modern, positive and welcoming European city.

"It is my hope that we can continue this message of positive progress, that we can commit to supporting the right to marry for all consenting, loving couples and that our City Council will support this growing call for equality and respect for human rights."
