The survey by the Co-operative Insurance shows that on average women pack 18 tops, 12 pairs of shorts or skirts and six bikinis for just a fortnight abroad.
Of those items she will only wear 12 tops, six pairs of shorts or skirts and just three bikinis while on a summer holiday.
Any remaining room in the suitcase is taken up by shoes, as the average woman will pack eight pairs for her summer holiday. More than a quarter (25%) of those surveyed will even find space for more than 10 pairs.
However, most women (75%) will only wear six pairs of shoes on a two week summer trip.
And if the cost of these items is totted up, the value of the clothes in an average woman's suitcase equates to a massive £1,140.
Lee Mooney, Head of Home and Travel Insurance at The Co-operative, said: "It will come as no surprise to learn than many women are packing far more than they actually need. Given that most people also pack high value items such as ipods and cameras, the value of a suitcase contents can be quite staggering.
"Not only do people over-pack, but holidays are often an excuse to spend more money as people will often buy new clothes to take away with them. Bearing in mind this cost, it's worth making sure luggage is properly insured to give you peace of mind in case the worst happens and belongings are lost or stolen."
The research also reveals that women spend an average of four hours packing their holiday wardrobe while one in 10 of those surveyed admit to deliberating over what to take for 12 hours or more.
Professor of Psychology at Lancaster University, Cary Cooper, explained: "Women plan ahead and pack for a whole range of situations. Take just a meal out - women will ask themselves what sort of meal it is. Is it smart, casual, somewhere in the middle? Most women will pack enough clothes for all these eventualities. It's no surprise that women tend to pack a lot of shoes, as of course shoes need to go with all the various outfit combinations.
"This is completely different from how many approach packing. Men don't think in terms of situations, they just think in terms of ‘smart' or ‘casual'."
Despite the hours many women dedicate to perfecting their holiday wardrobe, the research also shows that packing isn't a task relished by many women. Nearly a quarter (23%) admit that it leaves them feeling stressed while more than a fifth (21%) even agree that packing a suitcase is more stressful than going to work.
