William and Kate are scheduled to travel to an undisclosed location for an event with friends before returning to North Wales on Sunday to celebrate their anniversary alone.
A St James's Palace spokesman said: "They will spend the weekend with friends who have a celebration."
Private plans for the April 29 paper anniversary are a stark contrast to the Westminster Abbey ceremony last year which was viewed by billions of people on television.
"I think there is a very good chance that William and Kate will head to Balmoral - in fact I would say it is likely," Ingrid Seward, editor-in-chief of Majesty, told The Telegraph.
"They are both big romantics and like to return to the places that mean a lot to them. I think William will have in mind a romantic night in one of the estate's more isolated cottages - that is the way they seem to like to spend their special moments.
"One Hogmanay, William surprised Kate with a date in a fire-lit log cabin. She and William shared an estate cottage Tam-na-Ghar during their breaks as students from St Andrews. It has been done-up very well - but there are several other 'favourite' cottages around the estate they use, which are far more basic."
The royal couple have had an eventful 12 months, they honeymooned in the Seychelles, toured Canada and California last summer then returning home. William had six-week deployment in the Falkland Islands as an RAF search and rescue helicopter co-pilot, while Kate has carried solo engagements around the UK.
