A study of 2,000 adults, commissioned by insurer Direct Line, found that when men reach for a DVD, they look for sex, nudity and action, whereas women like to settle down with a musical rom-com with a happy ending.
Twice as many men look for sex in a film as women (25 per cent compared with 12 per cent), with four times as many men (21 per cent) wanting nudity in their perfect film compared with women (5 per cent). Car chases (36 per cent compared with 17 per cent) and action sequences (53 per cent compared with 38 per cent) are also far more popular with men than women.
In contrast, women prefer to indulge in a weepie (28 per cent compared with 15 per cent of men) and also enjoy a good song and dance routine – which puts men off entirely (24 per cent compared with 12 per cent men). This could explain why almost one in twenty women (4 per cent) said that their perfect film is a Bollywood-style musical.
Although the sexes can’t concur on what they do like in a film, they definitely agree on what they don’t, with both admitting to being turned off by overly complicated plots (33 per cent men and 37 per cent women).
When asked to name the most complicated film they have seen, the top five as agreed by both men and women polled were:
•Matrix Series
• Inception
• 12 Monkeys
• 2001: A Space Odyssey
• Donny Darko
Jane Crowther, associate editor at film magazine Total Film, said: "This research shows that the men and women really can’t agree on films – when you see a couple arguing at the cinema about what to watch, this research proves why.
"Films take us on an emotional journey and allow us to feel a range of different emotions – what women want from a film is something which reaffirms a positive world view, whereas men want films which tap into the very basic attributes of being alive – death, adrenaline and sex."
Matt Owen, spokesperson for insurance firm Direct Line, which commissioned the study, said: "Our research shows that film lovers are very clear about what they like – and especially what they don’t like – with overly-complicated, lengthy movies being among the worst offenders.
"In terms of what makes a perfect film, James Bond films fit the bill for men and a film like Enchanted will top the list for women."
