Partners are exploring their relationships in order understand one another better before marriage.
82% of the counsellors and psychotherapists polled by the UK’s directory of talking therapists would recommend couples see a counsellor earlier on in their relationship to discuss any difficulties before a crisis point is reached.
Couples counsellor Denise Pickup, one of the 4000 counsellors listed at www.counselling-directory.org.uk, has noticed the move towards couple seeking pre marital or early relationship counselling: "I have had an increase in couples asking for early intervention in their relationship. This seems to be an age-related approach embraced by under 40's who maybe see counselling as a useful tool rather than a crisis strategy.
"I have also noticed an increase in couples wanting pre-nuptial counselling which had been in decline for about 20 years. Often these couples have been in previous relationships or have a child together and then plan a wedding. They will tend to come with a specific issue rather than be looking for a wider overview on their future together."
According to Counsellor Cate Campbell, pre marital counselling isn’t just confined to young couples: "It's also true that, as well as people who seek counselling early in their relationship, some people who have lived together for years, and are in a well-established relationship, go to counselling when they decide to get married. It is an interesting phenomenon because you would think they would just not get married, but they just want to iron everything out before they take the plunge."
