Brian McGuinn, 34,from Florida unwittingly tossed his wife's sparkler in the bin with a disposable razor, according to The Sun Sentinel.
Anna McGuinn, 31, his wife of five years, who is 5 months pregnant with their first child, had expected him to put the the custom-designed platinum ring back into her jewellery box.
When the couple realised what had happened the rubbish had already been collected.
Brian called the Waste Management company and they allowed him to search the dump for the ring.
Brian arrived at the dump wearing a protective vest, suit and goggles. Plant worker Joel Ryan even leveled the 10-foot pile of trash with a bulldozer for easier searching.
"Nastiness you wouldn't believe,"Brian described the litter pile to the newspaper. "It was absolutely disgusting. It stunk beyond belief. The smell was God-awful. Everything unsanitary you could think of crossed my path at least a couple times. I took an extraordinarily long shower and toothbrushes were used."
After 30 minutes of searching Brian found the ring.
"It looked like a screw and I reached down and it looped around my index finger," he commented to the paper. "I was ecstatic. It was like winning the lottery. It was probably one of the best moments ever."
