UK Wedding News
09/11/2011
It was revealed yesterday that when the Queen’s granddaughter Zara Phillips married England rugby star Mike Tindall in a 'private family affair' the policing of the wedding cost in the region of £400,000.
This £400k police price tag will now be passed on to the taxpayer and it is understood that the cost was almost as much as policing the Pope’s visit to the Scottish capital last year.
The couple were said to have wanted a "downbeat" and "normal" bash in comparison to the high society event of Prince William.
Nonetheless, the task of policing the event on 30 July at the Canongate Kirk on the Royal Mile – where the guests included the Queen, Prince William and his new wife Kate Middleton – fell to Lothian and Borders Police and the bill will be passed on to the taxpayer.
Campaigners and politicians have described the news as "disappointing" and "astonishing" and condemn the fact that a low key event cost the public thousands.
