The survey by dating site FreeDating.co.uk asked which members were most open to having sex on a first date.
They then analysed what dating profile attributes those members had in common. A statistician built a model from the data, to see which profile attributes predict various first date outcomes.
The key findings looked at bodyshape, age, lifestyle, relationship status and education.
One of the more extreme pieces of information collected was: "Would you go all the way on a first date, regardless of whether you liked that person or not?"
10% of men fell into this category, although if they were students or married men, this figure rose to 20%.
Body shape and first date outcomes
Traditionally, the idea that larger women are more likely to have sex on a first date, has been linked with supposed issues around low self-esteem and reduced confidence.
The study seen same effect in taller women too - 5'9" and above - an attribute we might associate with high self-esteem and increased confidence.
"In fact, our research indicates no real pattern regarding attributes which might be associated with levels of self esteem and confidence, and first date outcomes," a spokesman for the dating site said.
Lifestyle
The study found attributes which we might associate with a more hedonistic lifestyle, such as drinking and smoking, tend to predict a greater openness to sex on a first date.
Women who prefer to spend their time in a bar, were increasingly likely to consider first date sex, whereas users who would rather be out cycling (male or female), or spending time with their family (men only) were significantly below the baseline in this respect.
Difference between the sexes
We have already seen how body shape predicts different first date outcomes in men vs. women, with athletic men aligned with large women.
Our research found other differences too:
* As men became increasingly better educated, their willingness to have sex on a first date increased in line.
* With women, the opposite is true: declining education levels lead to increased willingness to have first date sex.
* Bizarrely, an interest in cars predicts decreased likelihood of first date sex in men, whilst in women the reverse is true.
* Younger women (<25) are most open to sex on a first date, with the effect decreasing as they get older.
* In contrast, a man in his thirties is more open to first date sex than a man in his early twenties. Men peak in the range 25-29.
"Despite wide variations from woman to woman, it is interesting to note that women as a group are still way more reserved than men.
"So the youngest, largest, most drunken women, is about as open to first date sex as an average sixty year old guy," a company spokesman concluded.
The survey also showed that men who said they were married on the site were more likely to have sex on a first date than their single counterparts.
