A poll by One4all Gift Cards has revealed the Irish public prefer church weddings (71%) to civil ceremonies (29%) and would rather get married in Ireland (71%) than abroad (29%).
However if we the Irish opt for an abroad wedding Italy, which has hosted major celebrity weddings bashes for stars including Tom Cruise, Salma Hayek and Emily Blunt, was voted as the most popular country for an overseas wedding (31%).
When it comes to wedding etiquette, respondents agreed that laughing during the vows was the worst a guest can do (48%), closely followed by bringing a crying baby to the church (31%), or arriving late (16%).
In this day and age of digital photography respondents did not think that taking too many photos during the ceremony was a crime, with only 4% of people voting it bad behaviour.
Speeches should be kept short and snappy according to over half (55%) of those surveyed who agreed the perfect length of time for a speech is under 15 minutes. Only 8% want to hear between 30-45 minutes of speeches from the wedding party.
Telling inappropriate stories about the groom (41%) was voted the worst thing a best man can do in his speech. Other behaviour deemed tasteless in the best man’s speech includes mocking the bride (36%), forgetting to thank the parents of the bride and groom (16%) and mocking the guests (7%). Having too many drinks and acting rowdy was voted the worst a guest can do at a wedding reception (45%).
With wedding lists becoming less popular, it is a challenge to pick the right gift. According to the survey, porcelain figurines are the worst wedding gifts to give the happy couple while cash or a gift card are ranked the most fitting gift for newlyweds with between €50- €100 topping the poll as the most appropriate amount to give per guest to the bride and groom.
