Square Face

Triangular Face

Like those with an oval face, you are blessed with a bone structure designed for millinery. However, be careful that the crown of your hat is never narrower than your face. Be sure to wear your final adornment straight across the brow or hairline. More mature ladies should note that it is advisable to look for an upturned brim as this will draw the eye up and away from the neck area. This is particularly good if your are self conscious about double chins, heavy jowls or simply have a short neck.

Oblong Face

Tall and narrow hats should be avoided as these will elongate your features to cartoon like levels. Look for a design with a stylish brim. Your face shape lends itself particularly well to this feature. Try to ensure that you create a balanced clean line between your shoulders and the rest of your body.

Whether you choose to go hat or fascinator, it is worth remembering that neither can be considered an investment buy. You need to consider the wear to cost ratio. Spending a little more money on a bespoke hat can make a big difference to a plain outfit. However, it is worth considering that the same statement, can be made equally well using a contrasting colour. Take time to shop around and find a look that compliments both your outfit and your budget.

Finding the right size of hat is not as difficult as it would seem. Whether you choose to buy bespoke from a designer or off the peg at a high street store, it is a good idea to know your measurements. To discover this, simply take a measuring tape and place it on your forehead. Wrap the tape around the circumference of your head above your ears until both ends meet at the nape of your neck. Mark the end and remove. This is your hat size. Don't stress too much about getting the measurements perfect as you will be able to try most hats in store and milliners should take their own measurements to double check. Should your final choice of hat prove too big, stress not. Look at the interior of the hat, you should see clearly a ribbon. By simply attaching a piece of elastic ribbon to this using a running stitch, most hats can be decreased in size by up to 5cm, depending on the tension you apply to the elastic.
