The findings, published by sunshine.co.uk, found that over half of participants (54%) felt their in-laws would be the worst travel companion when it comes to a holiday. This was closely followed by their boss (38%) and an ex-partner (37%). 25% also claimed parents would be the worst holiday companion, with 19% honestly admitting it would be children for them.
The poll involved 1,668 Britons, all of whom were aged 18 and over. Of those who said the in-laws would be a terrible choice of holidaymaker, two-thirds admitted they had been on holiday with them before. They were also asked to give reasons as to their choice, and 45% said it was because they don't see "eye-to-eye" with their partner's parents, while 31% said it is because they have different ideas when it comes to holiday activities.
A further 21% said they would be unable to relax in their company.
Respondents were then asked what type of holiday would be unbearable to go on with their choice. 56% said a cruise would be the worst, while 27% said they would hate camping and 17% ruled out a cottage or villa break.
Chris Clark, Managing Director of sunshine.co.uk, said: "We all know what it might be like to go on holiday with people who we think could be annoying; after all, there is little opportunity to escape.
"The results do make for tough reading for those with sons or daughters in-law, as it appears that the old-fashioned jokes about the in-laws still ring true today.
"It's not surprising that holidays spent in close confinement are the least favoured, so there is still hope for having a holiday with the in-laws and enjoying it, so long as you each have your own space."
