The actress, who is a mum-of-three from previous relationships, announced in December 2014 that she was to marry the personal trainer. Now, speaking on ITV's Loose Women, the 38-year-old added that her partner gets on well with her children, and even asked the two eldest – Emilie and David – for their permission to pop the question.
She explained: "Yeah, he went to them about it."
The Coronation Street star then went on to say that, for her relationships, it has always been vital that the man is able to get on with her kids.
"It is an extension of loving your partner," she commented. "I don't think it would work, you can't be with someone who doesn't love your children."
She added: "We're very much a family unit."
This will be the third marriage for Marsh. She was previously married to actor Jack Ryder from 2002 to 2008, with their divorce finalised the following year. In September 2012, she married actor Jamie Lomas after four years of dating. They separated in 2013, with their divorce finalised in January 2014.
