Women Hide Beauty Secrets From Men

One in 20 women will not allow a partner to see them without make-up, a new survey has revealed.

The study, commissioned by QVS Beauty Tools Experts, also found that the average woman doesn't feel comfortable about their appearance until they have been with their other half for 19 months.

Some 1,000 women took part in the study which looked at women's beauty habits and relationships. Certain beauty tasks – like waxing/bleaching moustaches, or plucking eyebrows – were found to be kept a secret by women during the initial stages of a relationship. However, the longer a woman is in a relationship, the less concerned they become with maintaining the 'perfect' image for their partner. For some women though, they like to keep their beauty routine quiet from their other half.

When it comes to beauty habits women carry out – seemingly unbeknownst to their loved one – these include plucking nose hair or chin hair, as well as waxing facial hair. Wearing false eyelashes, control pants and push-up bras have also been used by some women, while applying fake tan and wearing hair extensions also made the list.

For four in 10 women, they admit to deliberately hiding their beauty routine from their partner, but 75% of respondents said that they longer they are in a relationship, the less likely they are to keep up with their full beauty regime. Yet for 5% of women, they confessed that even after 18 months with something, they still don't feel comfortable enough to let their partner see them without make-up. In fact, one in 20 said their other half had never seen them without make-up.

Interestingly, when the same number of men (1,000) were polled, more than a quarter said they had no idea what their girlfriend or wife's beauty regime entailed. Seven in 10 added that they would prefer to keep it that way.

A spokeswoman from QVS is quoted as saying: "All women will be able to relate to locking themselves in the bathroom to carry out top secret beauty tasks they don't want their partner to know about.

"Waxing or plucking unwanted hair and smothering yourself in fake tan aren't particularly alluring things to do, so it's understandable women don't want to broadcast these jobs to their other half.

"Most women of course have a regime that makes them look and feel better and the longer you have been with someone they more comfortable you feel in their presence.

"Getting up extra early to apply false eyelashes or to put in hair extensions on a daily basis to avoid your partner finding out you wear them does seem extreme."

She added: "Hair removal seems to be the most embarrassing thing that women would prefer to keep from their partner, but in a way, it's a compliment to the men in their lives that they are prepared to go to such lengths to look good and keep it a secret."
