The actor was appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show when the host decided to breach the subject of baby names with the 38-year-old.
Prior to the interview, DeGeneres had taken time out to tweet some suggestions, and then put them to Cumberbatch on the show.
She told him: "Because of your last name, Cumberbatch, you have to be careful with the first name.
"So Ingelburg is one name I came up with. Ingelburg Cumberbatch."
The actor didn't seem as enthusiastic, simply replying: "Yeah."
The host then suggested: "Harpsichord", and said it would work for a boy or girl.
"It could. It's a unisex instrument," he agreed.
'Carl' and 'Glockenspiel' were other choices put forward by DeGeneres.
Last week, Cumberbatch and his fiancée Sophie Hunter confirmed they were expecting their first child together. The couple first met in 2009 when they starred opposite each other in Burlesque Fairytales, but they were only spotted together publicly in June 2014 when they attended the French Open. In November 2014, they confirmed their engagement.
