It will be the first child for the 38-year-old British actor and his fiancée Sophie Hunter.
Earlier this week, the couple were subject to baby rumours after Ms Hunter, 36, was spotted with what looked like a small baby bump. Confirming the claims to the MailOnline, a spokesperson for Cumberbatch said: "I am delighted to confirm that Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter are expecting their first child. They are both over the moon."
The couple first met in 2009 when they starred opposite each other in Burlesque Fairytales, but they were only spotted together publicly in June 2014 when they attended the French Open.
In November 2014, they confirmed their engagement. It has been reported that they plan to tie the knot within the next few months.
