The couple said in a statement: "We will always love each other and be best friends, however, we have mutually decided to separate at this time."
The pair met when they were teenagers 22 years ago and married in 2005. They have a son, Julian Fuego Thike, who was born in 2010.
Last September Robin said to Prestige magazine: "I don't know if I would still be alive in some ways if it wasn't for Paula. She's been my rock, my muse, my inspiration and I love her. The whole way."
Paula said in the same interview: "We're best friends. We laugh a lot. But that's our down time."
However rumours of troubles appeared after his raunchy twerk-filled performance at the VMAs with Miley Cyrus, followed by a picture published in September which he appears to grope Lana Scolaro, who claimed he had kissed her at a party in New York.
He was also seen dancing with another woman after a performance at Club 79 Paris in January.
