Parents In Denial Over Kids' Weight

More than three-quarters (77%) of parents with obese children are in denial over their infant's weight, a new study has suggested.

The research by Imperial College London found that 77% of parents said their overweight child was "normal". Furthermore, in a report by The Times, of those who did claim their child was too heavy, many said it was "puppy fat" or as a result of their genes. Other parents said their offspring has a "big build", or were "solid".

Elsewhere, of the parents who admitted that their child was obese, only 41% accepted that their children's health could be in danger in the future.

For the study, the College interviewed 579 parents whose children had been said to be overweight.

Speaking to The Times, Dr Sonia Saxena, said: "There was disbelief that these measurements were accurate.

"They [parents] told us that they looked around and saw other children seemed to be very similar and so they didn't understand why they were being singled out."

This is not the first study to suggest that some parents of overweight children are in denial.
