The couple were only said to have started dating in December 2013, but have blamed their busy work schedules on the reason behind the split.
According to The Sun, a source is quoted as saying: "There was no big fall out, things just fizzled out as Niall and Barbara are both working in different parts of the world.
"They are both really busy and Niall is focused on recovering and getting ready for the band's massive Where We Are tour."
The source added that the former couple remain friends and are "still in touch".
Recently, 20-year-old Palvin shared an image on her Instagram account seemingly confirming the couple had decided to go their separate ways. The photo is of herself and a new secret guy, holding a bunch of flowers. It was accompanied by the caption: "Early Valentine".
