The most romantic day of the year is actually the worst day of the year to propose to your partner, a new study has discovered.
The research, commissioned by 77 Diamonds.com and carried out by a YouGov survey, found that seven out of 10 women do not want their boyfriend to propose to them on Valentine's Day.
Of the 1,107 women who took part in the poll, only 19% said they would like a Valentine's proposal, with a massive 74% saying they would not like a 14 February engagement. In a further blow, 9% of women admitted they would go as far as to reject their partner's proposal on Valentine's Day because it is "too gimmicky".
Instead, 45% of women said they would like the proposal to come out of the blue on a random day, while 20% said they would like their partner to pop the question "on a day that is significant to their relationship", but not on their anniversary.
Commenting on the results of the poll, Tobias Kormind, co-founder of 77 Diamonds.com, said: "Valentine's Day might be the day we traditionally most associate with romance, but these responses suggest that what ladies really appreciate is something original and unexpected – a proposal out of the blue.
"However, as this time of year tends to get couples thinking about their future together as well as their past, we hope Valentine's Day serves as encouragement to start planning that big surprise."
